Our History
Harry Castleberry had worked in the furniture industry, in some manner or means, for about 10 years.  He worked as a delivery man, retail floor salesman, a manufacturer's representative, a retail-chain store manager and a sales promoter.  On a cold fall evening in the early 1960's, while Harry was conducting a sale for a client in El Paso, Texas, the three-story family home (his parents had lived there) burned to the ground.  Witnesses said they saw vagrants going into the house, which was vacant for renovation, and building fires in the fireplaces to stay warm during the night.

Harry and his wife, Becky, had two sons, Cooper and Stan.  As an infant, Stan had an accident resulting in a brain injury, the complications of which were very demanding.  With Harry's job taking him out of town for weeks at a time, Becky had more than she could handle.  The insurance settlement from the fire gave Harry the opportunity to open his own store, stay in town, and help Becky with Stan.  In 1962, he opened Castleberry's Furniture Showroom at 113 W. Shepherd in Lufkin, Texas.

The store was small by anyone's standards and he quickly needed more space.  In 1963 he rented the store next door, cut a hole in the adjoining walls, and doubled his space. In a couple of years, he outgrew this space as well.  In 1965, the largest hardware store in Lufkin closed, freeing up a much larger building just one block from the store's present location and in the center of town.  In the summer of 1965, the store was moved to 118 S. First Street; however, the store continued to prosper and it wasn't long before an even larger showroom was needed. After almost 10 years, the store was being relocated to the spacious and recently vacant, 112 E. Burke. Ironically, Harry had managed Hemingway's Furniture, a chain based out of Shreveport, in that very location. Harry has sat right inside that store, many years before, wondering how he could ever afford to have a store of his own.  Things had come full - circle.

The years on Burke Street would see the biggest changes.  His son, Cooper, became a full-time employee and after Cooper married Julie Noland, her influence began to be felt.  A second location, Castleberry's Outside-In Shoppe, specializing in patio and rattan furniture, opened in 1976.  Sales soared to new heights, with monthly sales figures equal to the previous years annual totals.

Now 13 years old, and having always leased the buildings, it was time for Castleberry's Furniture to own it's own building.  Harry purchased property on Frank Street, the second busiest street in Lufkin.  Being located just two blocks west of downtown, and all of the other furniture stores, Harry and Cooper were able to build a state-of-the-art store and still be in the downtown area.  In 1981, after closing Castleberry's Outside-In Shoppe, Harry and Cooper built their permanent site and combined the two stores to form Castleberry's Furniture Center at 316 W. Frank.  This move placed them at the top of the retail furniture stores in the East Texas region.  Harry and Cooper were receiving industry recognition from trade associations such as Homefurnishings International, and Harry even wrote, "Furniture Operator's Manual," which was sold nationally.

In 1991 a second location, 1702 S. First Street, was purchased and The Furniture Factory Outlet was opened.  Ahead of its time, the concept was to buy seconds or discontinued items and offer them to the public at very deep discounts.  The factory outlet store craze had not yet started.

Harry's health began to fail in the early 1990's and after being in and out of Lufkin and Houston hospitals, he passed away in 1998.  This placed added responsibilities on Cooper; therefore, Julie stepped in and took over the buying responsibilities.  Business continued to increase and Castleberry's dominating force in the East Texas market was maintained.

Early the morning of October 18th, 2005, Cooper and Julie were awakened with the call - firetrucks had been dispatched to Castleberry's Furniture on Frank Street. When they arrived, they found the store and the work of two generations, was going up in flames.  For hours Cooper and Julie stood in disbelief as they watched the unbelievable.  After sunrise, friends who heard the news came to offer help and support.  The operation was moved to the "Outlet" store location while Cooper and Julie tried to decide their next steps.

What can we offer that is unique and not readily available in East Texas?  After hours of discussion and prayer, Cooper and Julie concluded there wasn't a store in the area that offered in-home decorating consultations.  National chain stores like Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel,  Williams-Sonoma, and Restoration Hardware were offering clean, youthful classics that East Texans wanted.  However, those stores were not in East Texas and often very, very expensive. Castleberry's mission was clear.

Castleberry's Furniture Showroom opened May 15, 2006, in the remodeled store at 1702 South First Street under the original name Harry created in 1962. The store specializes in the 'Pottery Barn' look at very affordable prices.  In-home decorating consulting is free of charge, and with access to major manufacturers, no look nor style is beyond reach or budget.  Decorating can be confusing and intimidating, but using our expertise can make it fun and exciting. We are waiting to serve you.
About Castleberry's

Often stores claim they are not like other stores, yet when you visit them, they are all alike.  Castleberry's really is different.  Here's why:

Complimentary In-Home Decorating Counseling
When making furniture purchases from us, we will visit your home and take measurements and create a to-scale drawing of your room.  We will discuss your ideas for the room, the room's use, and then suggest several furniture arrangements for your consideration.
This free service includes:
  • We will coordinate the fabrics, woods, rugs and anything else in the space - including things you already own.
  • We will help you select flooring, window treatments, and paint colors - even though we don't sell these items.
Selection and Service
Your choices are not limited by what we have in stock.
We encourage you to have your furniture custom made instead of settling for something that's 'just OK.'  We want your home to reflect your lifestyle and personality, not to be 'just OK.'  Having your furniture custom made often does not add to the cost.

We spend hours researching the latest trends and offer a cutting-edge assortment.  You'll find comparable items in some of the largest catalog / internet retailers in the nation, but at Castleberry's they are hundreds of dollars less.

If you do purchase from our inventory, we deliver within 24 hours.

Our service begins before the sale, with our knowledgeable sales staff.  Castleberry's has been in the furniture business in Lufkin since 1962.  We know our products so we can help you make an educated decision.

During the sale, service continues with our design service and financing options.  With our price protection policy, service continues after the sale.  We ensure you do not pay a higher price for comparable items anywhere.

Being locally owned and operated, you can speak to the owners at any time.  Just ask!

These are just a few of the reasons Castleberry's is truly different.
